Be an Egghead--Add Eggology Egg Whites to Your Protein Arsenal

Bodybuilders have been exposed to all types of protein from different sources--whey, egg-white protein, casein protein...how does a bodybuilder choose which type of protein to consume as a part of their daily diet?

Early in the 90s, studies revealed that whey gets digested quickly and thereby is a very effective ingredient to boost protein synthesis. Ever since then, people have opted for the less expensive whey protein than the more pricey egg white protein for muscle gain.

Later on, more studies revealed that slow-digesting proteins like casein actually minimized muscle protein breakdown and helped bodybuilders gain muscle.

Additionally, egg white protein digests fairly quickly. This allows egg whites to not only help boost protein synthesis, but also prevents muscle protein breakdown. Egg white protein is practically free of carbohydrates and fat--making it the perfect ingredient for those who are trimming down on fat.

Bodybuilders today are appreciating the value of egg white protein as more and more start to incorporate egg whites into their daily diets. Egg whites make wonderful protein shakes and smoothies--an easy and quick way to get your protein fix for the day!

So the next time you find yourself tempted to reach for the whey protein, take a look at the benefits of egg-white protein and try Eggology Egg Whites instead. Share your success stories with us (in the comment box) and we'll egg you on!

Ask The Eggspert: How Can I Know My Liquid Egg Whites are Safe?

Question: Are any liquid egg whites safe to eat or drink raw? What is the necessity of pasteurizing egg whites?

Answer: Did you know that Eggology egg whites are the only liquid egg whites safe to consume raw? Who consumes raw egg whites? You'd be surprised! Most of us have an image of bodybuilders drinking down a glass of liquid-y egg whites but raw egg whites can be found in other food items such as royal icing (read about royal icing and see recipe that we blogged about in December), in smoothies, in cheesecake, even in cocktails!

Eggology liquid egg whites are popular among bodybuilders and also utilized by chefs, hotels, restaurants, moms and dads because Eggology egg whites are the only egg whites safe to enjoy raw or cooked! Eggology egg whites are pasteurized and follow a strict USDA inspection process for the safety of our consumers.

Many people are unaware that pasteurization does more than kill the bacteria in an egg. A posting from the forum of EliteFitness.com egg-splains how a non-pasteurized egg/egg white can be potentially a carrier of bacteria and salmonella but also that your body cannot utilize the protein in the egg white until it is pasteurized. Before pasteurization (which is heating the egg/eggwhite enough to kill the bacteria), the egg contains a glycoprotein called avidin. Avidin blocks the uptake of Vitamin B6 and Vitamin H (Biotin) causing a vitamin deficiency. Pasteurizing the egg white neutralizes the Avidin and allows your body to safely digest the protein and utilize all its amino acids.

Eggology egg whites are not only the smartest choice for purity, freshness and taste - they are the smartest liquid egg white choice for safety too. Find out more about Eggology egg whites on our FAQs page.

Enjoy Your Egg Whites to the Max!

I am a fan of the popular TV show Dancing with the Stars. There! I said it for all of you to read. Last night I was elated to see Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson snag first place! She was great and it's hard to imagine that she is not even a legal adult (at 17 years old). Hooray for her! Reflecting on her gymnastics career, the drive she must have in her is admirable. Gymnasts are lean and muscular all at the same time and can do multiple somersaults in the air just with a running start. Curious, even though I knew the answer before my Google results popped up, I googled "gymnast nutrition egg white" and saw that the answer confirmed what I knew already. Many gymnasts stick to a lean, high protein, low carb nutrition plan and multiple sites and forums all suggested eating egg whites for one or more meals per day.

Eggology egg whites provide a convenient, easy and fresh way to get your dose of liquid egg whites every day! Here are some tips for you to enjoy your Eggology egg whites to their maximum!

  • Shake well - Gravity pulls the heavier part of the egg white to the bottom, leaving the watery part on top which will result in a foam-like consistency so shake it baby! Shaking the bottle serves the same purpose as beating an egg. Shake the bottle, even if you plan to whip the egg whites. You will also notice that your omelets will be more fluffy by doing so.

  • Omelets - When making an omelet, coat the pan with either a non-stick spray or olive oil. Always preheat the pan prior to pouring the egg whites – they will cook better!

  • Drinking Raw - Eggology egg whites are completely safe to drink raw, as it has been salmonella tested. For best assimilation of protein, always shake the bottle first. If you plan to make a protein drink, then it is best to stir or blend the drink for best protein absorption.

  • Whipping - Shake the bottle prior to pouring contents. Allow the egg whites to come up almost to room temperature, then whip to your heart's content.

  • Easiest Egg White Sandwich Ever - Pour ¾ an inch high of Eggology egg whites into rounded Tupperware type container that is the size of a piece of bread. Set the container lid on top, leaving space for air (do not affix lid). Cook in microwave for 75 seconds. View the now hardened egg white patty, and cook more if still watery. The egg white patty will pop right out, but use a spatula if necessary. *For the size of a muffin, use a coffee cup (no lid is necessary).

How do you enjoy your Eggology egg whites? We are always looking for recipes to share so email us or comment below!

Eggology Supports Earth Day: We Invite You to Get Involved & Win Egg Whites!

Earth day is just a month away! For the 39th year, we will come together to celebrate the Earth on April 22nd.

It truly is remarkable to think about how far we have come in protecting our health and safeguarding the environment! The government's Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) has pulled together facts on our Environmental Progress. Below are some of the impressive highlights from that list:

  • 1970 - 20 million people around the globe celebrate the first Earth Day; President Richard Nixon creates the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
  • 1972 - Clean Water Act: limits raw sewage and other pollutants flowing into rivers, lakes and streams
  • 1974 - Safe Drinking Water Act: allows EPA to regulate the quality of public drinking water
  • 1977 - Clean Air Act Amendments: strengthen air quality standards and protect human health
  • 1978 - The government bans chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as propellants in aerosol cans because CFCs destroy the ozone layer
  • 1987 - The United States signs the Montreal Protocol, pledging to phase-out production of CFCs
  • 1988 - Congress bans ocean dumping of sewage sludge and industrial waste
  • 1990 - President George Bush signs the Pollution Prevention Act: emphasizing the importance of preventing—not just correcting—environmental damage
  • 1991 - Federal agencies begin using recycled content products
  • 1993 - President Bill Clinton directs the federal government to use its $200 billion annual purchasing power to buy recycled and environmentally preferable products
  • 1996 - Food Quality Protection Act: tightens standards for pesticides used to grow food, with special protections to ensure that foods are safe for children to eat
  • 1997 - EPA issues tough new air quality standards for smog and soot, an action that would improve air quality for 125 million Americans
  • 2000 - EPA establishes regulations requiring more than 90 percent cleaner heavy duty highway diesel engines and fuel
  • 2003 - Healthy Forests Restoration Act: helping to prevent forest fires and safeguard and preserve the nation’s forests
  • 2006 - WaterSense is launched to raise awareness about the importance of water efficiency, ensure the performance of water-efficient products and provide good consumer information

Support of Earth Day is the driving force behind these Acts that preserve, clean-up and protect our mother Earth. You can do something as simple as practicing recycling in your home, and teaching about it to your children. No act is too small.

Which is why Eggology feels it is important recognize some everyday (and maybe not-so-everyday) eco-friendly deeds done by you! Eggology invites you to showcase how you respect the environment in your home, office, where ever! Look for this button on Eggology's home page and submit your email description, pictures and/or videos:

Diet Tips for New Years: Slim Down in Six Days

Ready to squeeze into that little black dress for your New Years Eve party? You have six days to do it - and it is possible!

I happened to catch a segment on NBC's Today Show this morning and with tips from Joy Bauer, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, it is possible to slim down and get yourself ready for a healthy 2009.

Joy Bauer provided some simple tips (see the video segment here) such as:
  1. Eat breakfast: this revs your metabolism and regulates what you are going to eat for the rest of the day. Her recommendation was an egg white omelet with veggies and half grapefruit - no more than 250 calories. Eggology egg whites are an excellent source of lean protein, no cholesterol, no fat!

  2. "Ditch the liquid losers": give up soda, fruit juice and sweetened coffee.

  3. "Skimp on starch": measure your cereal bowl (only one cup), eat an open-faced sandwich (cutting out one piece of bread can be significant), cut out other starchy foods such as bagels and pasta.

  4. "Cook yourself thin": make your own meals at home; people who regularly eat out consume 32% more calories; control your portions and save money. Find lots of healthy recipes using egg whites on Eggology's recipe page.

  5. Cut out treats: stop adding extra sugars into anything; the false taste of sweetener in your mouth makes it harder to combat sweet cravings.

  6. Snack smarter: one snack a day, between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner; 150 calories or less; and remember not just to eat carbohydrates, but add in lean protein too.

  7. Walk it out: 60 minutes a day for 6 days you can burn up to 3,600 calories.

Eggology Egg Whites: An Eggcellent Breakfast Choice!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! It's the meal that gets you going, providing you with energy for the rest of the day. Lots of people eat complex carbohydrates for breakfast, like cereals, bagels, toast. While those food are okay - some providing you with fiber, minerals and vitamins - a smarter choice is eggs. Why? Because eggs are packed with protein, which is important to replenish in your body after a good nights rest. And there is even better news for those who eat eggs for breakfast! Research has shown that those who eat eggs are inclined to a better weight loss strategy! According to MrBreakfast.com:
A study from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center showed that participants who ate two eggs for breakfast lost 65% more weight than participants in the same study who ate a bagel for breakfast, even though the bagel and the eggs contained an equal number of calories. The egg-eaters also lost 61% more body mass and felt more energetic than the participants who ate
bagels.

Wow! That is big news. Eggology suggests that you can have a healthy, lean protein meal by just eating egg whites! By eating egg whites, you will eliminate the cholesterol and fat that is found in a whole egg. So if you are striving for a weight loss goal, the best choice would be egg whites for breakfast: no fat and lots of protein!

For those of us who are busy, Eggology has fantastic On-The-Go microwavable egg whites. A perfect scramble with no oil and no pan. Easier than making toast!

Pasteurized, these whites come in refrigerated, pourable containers, with a slightly longer shelf life than regular eggs. We prefer the organic Eggology brand, which contains no added preservatives or flavors.

Try 'liquid eggs' in protein drinks
By
Lisa Ryckman, Rocky Mountain News
Friday, May 23, 2008

Question: I'd like to add eggs to my smoothies like bodybuilders do, but I'm worried about whether it's safe.

Answer: A fear of salmonella and other food-borne illnesses keep most people from cracking raw eggs into their protein drinks. But it's possible to get the protein-packed punch of eggs these days without any of the worry.

There are a number of liquid egg products on the market that have been screened for bacteria and are considered safe to consume without cooking.
Eggology, Papetti All White and Better n' Eggs all have been tested for both salmonella and listeria, the two most common bacteria found in eggs.

Eggology products, available online at
eggology.com, also have the advantage of keeping in the fridge for up to four months after opening, and they come in both regular and organic varieties. Powdered egg whites that mix well in smoothies are available at health-food stores.

Good news about egg whites: They're very low in calories - about 15 calories per egg - contain no cholesterol and are loaded with protein.

Trading Up: New Easter Promotion Lets Health-Conscious Consumers Eggschange Egg Cartons For Eggology Products

CANOGA PARK, CA. – With millions of consumers about to crack open their wallets to buy extra cartons of eggs this Easter, Eggology (http://www.eggology.com/) - the leading all natural egg white company – today unveils a new promotion specifically created to help egg lovers make the transition to egg whites and healthier egg white-only products the rest of the year.

The new “Easter Eggschange” promotion invites consumers to send in an empty egg carton (limit one submission per household) along with a paragraph or two describing their love of eggs and interest in switching to a healthier form of the timeless food staple. All egg cartons (which will be given to a recycling center) and accompanying letters must be received no later than April 23, one month following Easter day. Eggology will then select the ten most compelling submissions and send each winner $100 worth of products to enjoy.

Cartons and letters can be sent to:
Shaina Zalma
Eggology
9507 Santa Monica Blvd., Ste 300
Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Please include a self addressed stamped envelope with the submission. Certain restrictions apply; please visit http://www.eggology.com/ for details.

Commented Eggology founder Brad Halpern, “Since our products come without shells, they can’t compete with traditional eggs when it comes to Easter egg hunts and egg decoration events. But once the holiday is over and people go back to thinking about eggs as a food again, we think they’ll find our products offer a level of taste and nutritional value no standard egg could ever provide. Our new promotion seemed like a fun way to help consumers make this important transition to egg whites, and we anticipate offering the same promotion every year at this time.”

Sold in health and mainstream food, nutrition, and convenience stores around the country, Eggology’s products today extend well beyond the original 100% Liquid Egg Whites (which still remain hugely popular, as well as the only egg product fresh and pure enough to be packaged in a clear bottle). These include:

On-The-Go - One of the most original and appealing quick-serve food products on the market, with each cup equaling four fresh cage free pasteurized egg whites. They are not frozen or powdered, have a shelf life of three months refrigerated or frozen indefinitely and come to life in the microwave looking and tasting like fresh scrambled eggs (without the yokes) in 95 seconds.

Simply Sensational - A delicious new line of egg white protein-fortified muffins. These truly decadent and gourmet all-natural desserts are free of artificial flavors and preservatives, and possess a heightened level of richness and natural sweetness from the egg whites. Mini Carrot Cake, Carrot & Walnut and Oatmeal Raisin & Walnut muffins available.

Cool Cravings - A new Eggology ice cream brand featuring egg whites instead of yokes for higher protein content and a lighter texture. All flavors, including Amorour Almond Praline, Bodacious Blueberry, Captivating Chocolate Banana, Mind-Blowing Mint Chip, and Pulsating Pineapple Coconut, have chunks of real fruit, almonds, or coconut; and are 100% natural with no artificial ingredients.

Eggology Becomes First Egg Products Brand “Certified Humane” By Animal Welfare Auditor, Humane Farm Animal Care

CANOGA PARK, CA. – Eggology, the leader in the all-natural egg whites industry, has become the only liquid egg brand to be “Certified Humane” by Virginia-based animal welfare auditing organization, Humane Farm Animal Care. It was announced today by company founder Brad Halpern.

“Certified Humane” hens have over 3 times the space that hens have in battery cage factory farms. The Certified Humane logo shown above right will be featured immediately on the http://www.eggology.com/ website and will begin appearing on the company’s line of products over the weeks ahead.

Eggology has also become a staunch supporter of Californians for Humane Farms’ efforts to pass a precedent-setting California ballot in November eliminating chicken cages in the state.

Added Eggology founder Brad Halpern, “We are truly honored to receive this prestigious certification since the welfare of chickens and all animals has always been of tremendous importance to me personally and to Eggology corporately. I look forward to working closely with the great people at Californians for Humane Farms on this important November ballot and to doing everything humanly – and humanely – possible to eliminate the caging of chickens in California.”

Eggstra! Valerie Waters' Eggcellent Egg White Recipe

Getting in shape - and staying in shape - is not just about fitness. It's about nutrition as well. Even Valerie Waters, "Hollywood's Hot Trainer" proclaimed by US Magazine, implements food rules - one of them is to learn to cook five or six things that can be made in less time than it takes a pizza delivery to arrive.

And one of her favorite recipes is made with Eggology Egg Whites. Her eggcellent recipe is below (try this for dinner too!):

Egg white spinach, mushroom, onion and feta cheese scramble (Valerie's favorite breakfast)

WHAT YOU NEED:

1/3 cup Eggology liquid egg whites
Small handful of chopped mushrooms
1-2 tablespoons chopped onion
2 big handfuls of spinach
1 tablespoon crumbled feta cheese

INSTRUCTIONS:

Spray a non-stick pan with Pam cooking spray and heat on medium high.

Add mushrooms and onions and stir until browned. Add 2 giant handfuls of spinach (don’t worry it will cook down). Toss spinach until wilted.

Reduce heat to medium and add in egg whites and continue to stir until eggs begin to set.

Add feta cheese and continue to stir for about 30 more seconds and serve.

Eggology Interview with Personal Trainer Valerie Waters

Valerie Waters is one of Hollywood Hottest trainers, someone we really admire (a total health enthusiast and role model) and a lover of Eggology Egg whites! Valerie was kind enough to take time out of her busy training schedule to answer some questions for our readers....enjoy!

Q. How did you get into personal training?
I ran track in high school. One day the coach took us into the weight room and taught us how to lift weights. I was fourteen years old and remember that day like it was yesterday. From then on I was obsessed with working out and began a life long love affair with weight training. Eventually I got a job at a gym selling memberships which I was never very good at. Management convinced me to try training. The industry was just emerging at this time and this gym was one of the fist to actively promote it. Within a month of starting, I was booked solid eight hours a day and loved it! I knew then that I had found my calling. It is nearly 20 years later and I still love it!

Q. How did you discover Eggology products?
I originally saw it in the supplement section at Gold’s Gym. I bought it on the spot and have not turned back since. It is a well known fact that egg whites pack a nutritional punch. Now with Eggology, I can be assured of getting a good source of protein and because of the convenience I can save time in the kitchen.

Q. In what ways do you recommend Eggology to your clients?
Many of my clients don’t cook either because they think they don’t have time or they don’t know how. Scrambled egg whites using Eggology is one of the first things I teach because of the simplicity and the fact that I want my clients eating breakfast. Besides the fact that egg whites are a great source of protein, they are fast and easy.

Q. What is your philosophy on health and fitness?
I believe that exercise is a means to an end. You workout out in the gym (or home gym) because it is a very efficient way to build strength and endurance, but I want you to take that new level of fitness and get out and have some fun. For me that is surfing or hiking with friends. For you it may be something else. The bottom line: workout to look better but don’t make that your only goal. There is so much more available to you when you adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Q. Do you have any athletic role models?
Lance Armstrong. I don’t even ride a bike but I am simply in awe of what this guy has accomplished athletically, personally and professionally.

Laird Hamilton. Here again, I can’t do any of the things Laird can do but I am inspired by his 100% commitment to living life to the fullest extent of his being. He helped bring new meaning to extreme surfing and he pioneered many sport innovations.

To me, these two men represent energy personified.

Q. What inspires you to stay so healthy and fit?
My job and my clients certainly, but more important is the quality of my life. I simply cannot imagine my life without exercise. It affects everything; my energy, my mood, my creativity, my skin, my body. I am truly grateful for my body even with its imperfections and minor aches and pains.

Q. If there is ONE piece of health advice you can give our readers, what would it be?
There is no magic pill. Being fit requires commitment and effort but please recognize there is joy in this. Being fit is not a two week diet or a new piece of exercise equipment (although these things may kick it off) it is making small but meaningful choices each day. Choosing to get up an hour earlier to workout instead of staying in bed, bringing a healthy lunch with you to work instead of going out for fast food, choosing water over soda, or choosing grilled chicken over chicken enchiladas. Each action builds on the other until you are living your life as a healthy fit person. At this point, there is a lot less struggle because these actions have become habits. There is no argument about whether to stay in bed or not, if it is workout day, you just put your feet on the floor. You don’t even consider skipping breakfast, you just have your go to foods for quick and easy breakfasts such as a yogurt or Eggology’s microwaveable single serving egg whites.

Q. Tell us about the Valslide! How you got the vision for this, etc.
The Valslide is without a doubt the most effective and most portable fitness product on the market. The Valslide will help you sculpt your body fast and effectively, no matter where you train. My clients (and I) are always traveling, whether it is for a movie shoot or for vacation. Often times people fall off track with their fitness program while they are away simply because they don’t have access to equipment. Now that my clients have the Valslide, they can get in a workout wherever they are. They just throw it in their purse or suitcase and it’s all they need to get in a great workout.

I was inspired to create the Valslide after being frustrated that my slide board took up so much room and I could not easily bring it with me to a client’s house. I had learned the value of the slide board exercises when I trained at a facility catering to professional athletes. One day, I was inspired to make something portable that could simulate slide board exercises and the Valslide was born! Check it out at http://www.valslide.com/
